  • Microsoft Drops Live for the Original XBox

Microsoft announces it will Drop Live for the Original XBox

Remember your first XBox. Old faithful that didn't know the meaning of Red Ring of Death. It was there for all those Halo parties at home, was what got you on line playing with people who knew how to Super Jump. Old faithful was what introduced us to Clan Life. It was built in to the format. You had your Friends list and YOUR CLAN LIST. Clan matches were part of the game list. Life was good.

Those days are numbered. April 15th will be the end of Live for the Original XBox. Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten said in a statement " We'll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of XBox 360. To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original XBox V1 games."

The XBox Live press releases all point out that 2010 will be a landmark year for XBox. With the release of Halo Reach and Project Natal they plan on expanding Live and The Dashboard to new limits. The Halo Nation has reached 23 million people. They don't plan on letting them down.

If you currently own a live account on the Original XBox, those will not be renewed. All accounts will end April 15, 2010. The big games played on the box now are Halo 2, Battlefront and Star Wars.

Microsoft said this was not an easy decision. Mar Whitten continued saying "I want to start by saying this isn't a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the XBox Live community. Halo 2 has had an amazing run on LIVE, with a dedicated community more than five years after launch and well into the next generation of consoles. It has fundamentally changed the way we play video games. And while it's difficult to see that run come to an end, the "Halo" franchise continues to act as the benchmark for multiplayer gaming in this generation, with "Halo 3," "Halo 3 ODST" and soon "Halo Reach"

They tell us the best is yet to come. Bring it!

    UPDATE:

As far as CEG is concerned, we will plan a Halo 2 Day in the near future and offer a prize to mourn the passing of an old friend. Stay tuned for details.

You will be able to play the game, but not on line. Here's a quote.

Microsoft announced Friday that it would discontinue online service for all original Xbox games, even those playable on the Xbox 360 or available as a digital Xbox Originals download, on April 15.

After all the pushing to get people to buy and download original games, I can't believe they would just turn those off. But then again, this MS we are talking about so anything is possible.

The Live feature for the Xbox was easily hacked and easily tampered with. It was bound to happen as to why they waited this long who knows. I'm glad they finally did something, now if they would only fix the party booting clause.

Ugh, I wish my halo 2 disk worked! ... Turf, original blackout, beaver creek, the board with the people mover things *terminal?)!!

.. didn't we read somewhere though that the only reason we couldn't have over 100 people on our friends list was because H2 couldn't support it. So the one good new behind this is you might be able to have a bit more people on your friends list, who knows.
